Although women in China often obtain lower education level, have lower labor force participation and earn less salary than men, there is no obvious evidence about whether these lower outcomes are the result of lower parental investment in girls. In this paper, we investigate whether parents treat girls and boys differently in China. Our results consistently show that girls receive less resource than boys. Relative to girls, boys’ duration of breastfeeding is 0.793 month longer. We also fine suggestive evidence that the quality of childcare given to boys is higher. Moreover, we find that parents often wish boys to attain higher education level and more to save money for boys’ education. We also investigate why parent may choose to invest more in boys. We find that mother’s son preference accounts for the effect of child gender on investment. And mother’s son preference degree reduces along with mother’s education level increasing. We find that mother’s education dose not directly relieve gender difference, but through to change mother’s son preference.
